It was Baron A.F.Cronstedt; A Swedish mineralogist that discovered and named Zeolite a natural accruing mineral, that when heated appeared to boil. The Greek words (zein) means “To boil” and (lithos) meaning “stone.” The bubbling Cronstedt saw, was the release of water from the pores of the crystals. Each crystal has thousands of tiny channels that form a cage like structure. If you were to take the channels from a teaspoon of these crystals and spread them out, they would cover the area of an entire football field. It is these cages that make Zeolite a molecular sieve, which is used in many applications, in a variety of industries. Natural zeolite was the first ion exchange water softening media, exchanging the sodium ion for the calcium and other mineral or metal ions. The benefit was to eliminate stains and scale build up in plumbing systems.
Throughout the 1900s to the present, scientists have been developing new synthetic or man made zeolites. Even the space program has been studying the effect of zero gravity on growing zeolite. Today zeolites are used in industries such as the petrol chemical, medicine, food and beverage, water conditioning, gas manufacturing and separation, electronics, air purification, and hydroponics, just to name a few. The discovery of the boiling stone has improved and vastly changed our standard of living.
As scientists learn more about cause and effect, we will be able to correct mistakes made to the environment, develop new target specific drugs, find better ways to store energy, and live longer productive lives.
